I'm thirty-eight hours into my work week. I'll have six tomorrow, fourteen on Friday, and probably the same for Saturday and Sunday. The extra time is for...(tada!)...a server migration!

When Hurricane Katrina bore down on work, our proper disaster recovery plan put our data in much safer climes, specifically Wilmington, Mass. Since early September we've worked with our data over the long wire, bearing up with long delays in opening files, browsing websites. yada, yada, yada. For me it's not much of a big deal because I can do a lot of my work remotely, but for users who rely on having data close by, it's a nightmare. So the engineers and accountants and contracts people all have complained day upon day about how slow things are.

This weekend is the big show. Or at least part of it. I'm moving 750 Gigs across country, some by tape, the rest by wire. This is the culmination of four months of assbreaking work. The long days and nights, the horrid commutes (all eleven thousand miles worth), the cold showers at home when hot water was unheard of, the MRE's, all put up with so I could...work. This would have been done a month ago, had it not been for the brilliance of my manager, who felt it necessary to bring whatever progress we had to a grinding halt.

Mind you, El Jackass hasn't been in one status meeting the whole time. Moron.

So here I am, having seen the kids one night this week, chatting with the new Vietnamese cleaning crew about when the good restaurant down the street will open again, digging through other departments' fridges looking for the dinner I didn't bring with me.

I would love to quit, I really would. Won't happen of course.

Back to learning this new Veritas software. Ta.
