As with all of my disaster recovery tests, I spent the usually 36 hours awake, enjoying the low hum of cooling fans and industrial ventilation. Mixed into my tasks was that most wonderful of weather's delights (at least to this roux-stirring Southerner): snow.
This facility is deep in the hills of the Hudson Valley, a veritable bunker against the modern world, hidden in trees and greenery. As I strolled about the building in the early hours of morning, I happened upon a sight. The season's first snow, light soft flakes, barely even enough to float from the clouds. Gentle specks swirled from above, catching the moon's beams and illuminating the trees with a heavenly shower of luminescent diamonds.
I was quite sure the locals thought me mad to insist upon a visit to the parking lot to purposely run my fingers through the luxurious powder that accumulated on my rental car. Cold and crisp, the air I breathed in was a stark contrast to the winter I am so familiar with.
Now, after my usual trials and tribulations, the snow has faded to rain, in turn making my winding drive home a probably minefield of black ice and hungry deer.
Wish me luck flying out tomorrow.
And go LSU!
