So what's it like around here? Kinda weird. You try to avoid the Subject, but eventually you end up back there. Last night at the game, we'd end up talking about it. Went to the bar, same thing. I woke up listening to WWL (I fucking hate Bob Delgiorno. have I ever mentioned that?), watched the Weather Channel during breakfast, and had the NHC open on my laptop all day long. You can't escape it and you can't resist it. There's fear, for what might happen, and sadness, for the real possibility you won't continue living in this limbo if it's Katrina all over again.

People are leaving town, even though this storm is not even in the Gulf. Probably they were already going to make a beach trip out of the Labor Day weekend. So much for that. Although I'd probably hit the beach. I know a few brave souls that are going to stay, including my next door neighbor. He lived in Arabi before the K, so he's feeling better about his odds in Mid City. Most of my friends and neighbors are leaving tomorrow, be it long distance or a brief jaunt just to get the hell away from the mad crush on Sunday.

Here's what I'm thinking. We'll spend all day tomorrow packing, tying down things, getting our papers in order, taking photos of everything, inside and out. When I say we, that goes for most everyone I know. Then we turn off the fridge (maybe the power and gas, too) and bail the hell out of here. We drive to Tracey's folks in Lacombe. Wake up Sunday, early, and jump into contraflow north. We have a reservation in Cleveland, MS, just south of Clarksdale. Dude! Fried catfish and Delta tamales on the Blues Highway? Sign me up!

We're taking both cars this time and a selection of clothes to last into October. I recall not having a jacket last time around. Or a sweatshirt for that matter. Major suckage. So we gear it all up. I have a van to fill up, a roof rack to stick luggage in and a Civic that the rest of the family can ride in.

We have guitars, Wii, books, game, mobile DVD, phones, vital papers, work crap, clothing, a refrigerator's worth of food (like I'm losing another fridge? not.), irreplaceables, some of my Shirts, photos, all of the computers in the house, dvd's, enough MP3 to last us till spring (including Halloween, Christmas, New Year and Mardi Gras music), the kids music players, all of the Wired mags I haven't read in the past year, some of my lighters, a sci-fi trilogy by C.S. Lewis I never got to this summer, wind-up radios, flashlights, a dog and a betta.

If this is long term, I making a circuit up to our friends lake house in Lake of the Ozarks, if anything just to forget about what's happening. Shorter term, I'll be at the farm. Likely we'll end up at the farm anyway.

So here's my thing. I'm almost always connected. Some of you have my mobile. If you really want it, email me and I'll get it to you. I'm going to post updates, maybe even shadow the last evac and do a rare phone post. Regardless, I'll be out there somewhere.

But look. Don't cry for me, Argentina. I, well, we make a sacrifice by living here. For all the risks we take in dealing with times like these, and having the worst politicians money can buy, New Orleans remains my home and its people are the reason I will always come back. It's a gamble. I could lose it all this time (and I don't have wind insurance!) or I could be utterly unaffected. But I've been here before. I know the path. We'll be okay.

And I'll be sure to take pictures of that fried catfish.

Oh, one more thing. Go look on that tracking map again. Just to the east? Yeah. Hannah. And she's planning a visit to the Gulf. The fun never ends.
