I know it's an old and tired event for some folks, but Jazzfest is a holiday for this house. 2009 is the 40th anniversary and I think they've booked a solid show again. Check this out:

Wynton Marsalis
Aretha Franklin
Dave Matthews Band
James Taylor
Sugarland
Joe Cocker
Ben Harper
Tony Bennett
Earth, Wind & Fire
Wilco

What? Aretha? JT? DMB? Tony Bennett? Earth, Wind & Fire???

EDIT: From the full list I found a few more gems. At least to me they are:

Drive By Truckers
Etta James
Spoon
Pete Seeger
Los Lobos
John Mayall
Cedric Burnside & Lightnin’ Malcolm

And a gazillion local artists, as usual.

Check it out here: Jazz Fest 2009

I am so psyched for James Taylor!

And it's the first weekend, which is my preferred weekend.

I skipped last year, basically due to a lack of interest, so I'm glad there's some things this year that will compel me to go.

JT! I'm kind of psyched about this schedule. And it's not even Mardi Gras!!!

how can it be old and tired with new acts every year? I'm just a pussy when it comes to the outdoor heat down here. my brain gets confused, is it time to work out or party, or are you at a concert? because all 3 cannot be happening at the same time.

line-up has nobody I'm like, "I have to see....".

To me, Jazzfest is all about logistical strategy. In other words, get a rough line-up of the acts I want to see, then morph that according to the weather. No matter what you have to intersperse stages with tents. And food of course.

It's the sum of the parts that keeps me going.

that's a skilled penguin. I may have to leave the house this summer and apprentice for a day or 2. I'm serious. I like me some james taylor. and I'm curious enough about spoon live and earth wind and fire..

Absolutely. I have two modes at Jazzfest: family and solo. Family mode consists of a base camp, usually with a bunch of my hoodies, and we wander throughout the Fairground, always coming back to the encampment.

For solo mode, though, it's usually just me. I have an aggressive schedule, with lots of tent time, mostly at the blues stage, a staple of mine. I can fit ten-fifteen acts in like that, eating, drinking (perhaps smoking) my way through the day. Solo mode is my best for taking photos, too.

Dude...he just left them out.

Erykah Badu on the first weekend and Kings of Leon on the second weekend. Depending on my work schedule, I'll try to work VIP again so I can score free tix...again.

I think I need to keep it true
and see miss badu
if there's one thing I do
show and pru

KOL have some pretty awesome stuff about 2-3 albums back. I like maybe 3 songs on their new record. and I am not dealing with boy crazy bitches with scarves on in 90 degree heat to watch these doods.

I haven't found JF to have a lot of boy-crazy bitches. I saw KoL at Voodoo a couple of years ago and they were pretty damned good.

their latest recording has been dubbed by many as their official selling out record. which you can debate all day about what that means.

it's just their sound has gotten more middle of the road with every album and they're losing their flavor instead of refining it. that's all I really care about. leave the labels and critical bullshit for the people trying to get website hits and sell magazines.

Ya know I don't get why they are bringing in Erykah Badu. She was just at Voodoo this year.

And wasn't she just at JF in the past few years?

Not to say that's a deal-killer, as demonstrated by the bi-annual appearance of Widespread Panic's three hour set at the Fairgrounds.

Maybe. I was just surprised they booked her because she was here a month and a half ago.

And Better Than Ezra wasn't here...every other month since eternity? Same thing with Dave Matthews Band, Cowboy Mouth, and all those other bands that play at Fest all the time. What about all the local acts that perform there that you can see for $10 any other time of the year?

The local acts don't bother me because I expect that. Though it seemed as if Voodoo was trying to draw in some of the Jazz Fest crowd with some of their bookings. But a national act that was here a month ago? Seriously. It is over saturation.

Say now, DMB hasn't played the Fest in a good while, as opposed to my other example, Widespread Panic.

BTE and Cowboy Mouth...I'll be in line for the crapper.

Aretha Franklin AND Etta James!!!
dood!

I saw Etta at JF years ago. It was a super short set, and it was POURING outside the tent. But it remains one of my top JF memories.

What can I say? They are my client. If it make you feel better, I had to take a blood oath not to say anything about the line up, and I had to stay at work until 9 last night making last minute changes to the events.

Just so you know if you are planning to go every day one weekend they have a discounted weekend pass this year.

It means everyone hasn't been booked. They won't give us names if they aren't confirmed. I tell you what. If I hear anything I will let you know.
